SO! I'm trying to up my catalog of superpowered Villainess (so far, my only POWERED villainess is poison ivy) with that in mind, i attempted to make Giganta, almost THREE YEARS AGO. why did i never show her? cus i didn't like what i came up with. But after some research, and some thought, i'd figured i would try AGAIN. and here are the results! three different costume tries at Giganta. I went towards the african cultural motifs because, frankly, i couldn't think of anything else.
The DC encyclopedia was pretty scarse about her origins, and the DC Wiki was a bit..confusing, so in an attempt to better blend her into my Earth 29 universe, i tried to come with a new origin. Here's what I was thinking: South African Scientist adopted into an inner African tribe, has a child named Doris, who accidently injests an herb similar to Elastic Man's Gingkold, and viola, gets banished from village, and poof instant angry giant lady. this is a BAREBONES origin attempt, as I need to get more of her motivations down, but i hope it explains some of my methodology. This is also why i attempted to make her a bit mixed race, but honestly, i've said this before, but i SUCK at accurately capturing Ethinicities. ANYWAY! onto the costume tries!
First Try!
I was going for a sexy cross between her skirt look, and what she wore in the JLU cartoon. this was the look i made up almost three years ago, and whilst i think its PASSABLE, i do feel its a bit boring.
Second Try!
This was my second shot. i was trying to ape her catsuit look, particularly the one i saw in Blue Beetle 19. its not EXACTLY her costume in that issue, but i wasn't so much trying for accuracy as i was trying to blend it into my african motif. i THINK this is my best bet at a good costume, as its the one my friends like the most.
Third Try!
This was my shot at a traditional Skirted look. i think its okay, but like the first try, i think its a bit BORING.
My major issue with all of these however, is that i feel their lacking something. WHAT, I don't know.
ANYWAY! gimmie your thoughts please!
SO! a couple of notes before you critique!
1) since these are wips and i am posting them STRICTLY for the purpose of critique, i WILL hide any comment that is just 'nice job!' or 'that loooks great!'. no arguments, cus i'm posting these to GET critique, as opposed to my normal art.
2) if you think you can't comment cus you don't know 3D, just treat them as if i drew them, and ignore the fact that their 3D. if something can't be done cus its 3D, well, thats MY problem, not yours.
3) feel free to be as vicious as you need to be! i'd rather have brutal honesty then kind lies!
oh yeah, PLEASE don't submit this to groups! its a WIP!
AND! All characters depicted are (C) to DC!
Another suggestion is that if you want her to be half-African then darken her skin. At least give her a good tan if she's been running around the jungle most of her life.
I like your idea for the origin of your Earth 29's Giganta. It is different from both the current origin, stolen body of a circus strongwoman and the classic gorilla changed into a human.
As to which of the three costumes to go with, myself I have always been a fan of Giganta's two piece leopard spotted outfit. So for me, my vote is for try #1.(Please don't pic outfit #2) Now for some possible tweaks to the outfit, may I suggest:
1) Increase the length of the skirt about an inch or so. This way she can bend over when she needs to and not worry about the skirt riding up.
2) Remove the upper arm bangles and maybe just go with something on one upper arm.
3) Instead of having wrist and ankle jewelry match, have the wrist jewelry be just bracelets(like what you have on there now.) and then have something different for her ankles. Also, I like the idea of her having a belt attached to the skirt but instead of making it gold, maybe make it out of leather and have it a more natural color.
4)And I agree with Drakefenwick, she should be a little bit bulkier. Thicken her waist and broaden her shoulders a little. And add a little bulk to her arms and legs. If she has been banished from her village for a long time, she would have had to become a stronger person just to survive and keep herself fed. Also tan her skin a little bit too.
Now what I like about your design: I love the collar. That really stands out and it helps show her country of origin. Also I really like the hair style. Please don't change it.
I hope my suggestions are helpful. I can not wait to see the finished model.
Thank you for your time.
Comments on your costume tries themselves:
I like the neck, arm, wrist and leg bangles in #1 and 3 they give her an tribal-inspired look.
The hair is gorgeous!
#1: Nice, if physics-defying, which is ok for comic book costumes. Her skirt could use a traditional rough-hewn uneven edge. Yeah, that's hard-to-impossible in Poser, isn't it? I think you should even ditch the gold belt to make the costume more primitive. The spots in the top should be matched to the spots in the skirt. This is the best of the three, IMO.
#2: If you look at her comic book catsuit, it's color-blocked to emphasize her shoulders and legs to make her look tougher and more masculine. In your try, you've minimized them in black.
#3: Actually I like this one almost as much as #1. It's more like her animated look in the pink dress and it does have simplicity going for it, but the other commenters are right: It is a bit bland. Maybe make the dress/top one-shouldered and offset it by making the neck bangles asymmetrical so it runs down her other shoulder?
Overall very good for a WIP
