WIP 1 - Huntressby ~petercotton

So! first wip, is a character that i've been asked to do, MANY TIMES.
that is, Huntress! so, as you can see from the SIX different iterations, i'm having a hard time actually nailing her look. each try is based off of something specific.

so, the first two try's are based of this GREAT cosplay by Miss-Riddle,

the next two are based of THIS try, which i assume is her new default costume : [link]

and the last two is an alagmation of both, along with the Jim Lee shorts outfit, which is popular enough that i don't think i need to link to it.

at the moment, i'm leaning towards number 6, since it is both sexy AND practical (which is my major watchword for my batfamily girls, sexy, but fairly practical)

SO! a couple of notes before you critique!
1) since these are wips and i am posting them STRICTLY for the purpose of critique, i WILL hide any comment that is just 'nice job!' or 'that loooks great!'. no arguments, cus i'm posting these to GET critique, as opposed to my normal art.

2) i think the skin/body here is pretty much final, its just the costume that i'm looking for help with.

3) if you think you can't comment cus you don't know 3D, just treat them as if i drew them, and ignore the fact that their 3D. if something can't be done cus its 3D, well, thats MY problem, not yours.

4) feel free to be as vicious as you need to be! i'd rather have brutal honesty then kind lies!

oh yeah, PLEASE don't submit this to groups! its a WIP!

The purple/black colors are perfect. Don't change them. I like #6 for your same reason, but would get rid of the big white cross and put the smaller cross like on #2.
I would also remove her bat-eared looking masking and make a simple mask like Robin's.
Just my opinion.

Honestly, I think the first one is closest to being the best of the bunch. While it still has the cut-out stomach that everyone uses as an excuse the hate Huntress, I think the duller colours lend themselves better to her personality and style. You can also see the details on her boots a little better too with the darker colours. But the arms do look a little bare on the first... I think overall a better cape would prove to be a good solution. One that cuts across her shoulders in a straight line (that goes with the mid-section of the white cross) would work to cover her arms a bit more. And she could use an even longer cape. Mostly just because she's always been the heroine with the longest capes.

I'm not really feeling the chin-strappy thing on the mask. It makes her look like she has a bum-chin. Also, you may want to sharpen the mask a bit at certain points as the best way to distinguish her from Batwoman in terms of masks is the shapes. Huntress' is a bit sharper and features more detail to it. I would definitely reference Ed Benes' Huntress mostly for that [link] And speaking of Batwoman, I'm surprised you switched Helena and Kate's hairstyles.

Helena is usually the straight-haired one and Kate the wavy-haired one. Then again, Kate's hair is just a wig in the comics now so she could really do anything. She could very well become like Sherry Shepard on The View. >.<

AAAAAAAAND lastly just a random comment, the second set of costumes based on the shoulder-pad outfit of hers only appeared in the Batwoman back-up issues. Huntress already gets enough flack for her costumes without having football player shoulder pads to contend with. >.<

So glad Helena has made it into your DC girls line-up. Or at least will be joining them. With her making it into your gang, that brings you closer to a possible Birds of Prey picture. Love me some Birds.

yeah, the birds of prey is pretty much the sole reason i'm trying to get Huntress right. i pretty much hated her in every book BUT the Birds, so i'm trying to do her SOME justice. anyway, will post a second wip in a while with some updated costumes. and yeah, 1/2 are pretty much the winners so far, according to comments. not sure bout the longer cape thing, cus i REALLY hate capes >.< is why i'm trying everything in my power to not give her one >.< (yeah, main reason i'm using the Black Canary Jacket, too)

on the mask: yeah, in general it needs an update, but that will prolly be the LAST thing i do, as its general shape is good, and thus it doesnt need as much work as the other aspects of Huntress.

Yeah, writers just don't care about Huntress for some reason. She's this great Italian-American character with a fantastic mob backstory and this caring side that loves children but she's always written as the uber-violent, careless and promiscuous vigilante-type. Not to mention she has the Catholic upbringing that's always interesting to work with. Gail Simone definitely made her worth loving. That's not to say others didn't do some cool stuff... I remember an issue of Catwoman where Huntress and Catwoman work together to steal some money and Huntress forces Catwoman to donate all the money to charity.

I kind of figured that you didn't like capes when I saw the shorter length and lack of them in the WIPs.

But with a character like Huntress, who's pretty much always had capes, it's worth working that extra bit to nail it.

hmm I like the color and thickness of the cross on two, the size of the cross on 4 i.e. down past her belt, and the cut of the outfit on 6. But all of them are good.

I like the smaller white cross in pics 1 & 2, but I would brighten the purple a bit and lose the jacket and cape in favor of more armor.

The second one reminds me of the BOP Black Canary due to the jacket. I really can't think of any major errors anywhere. The first one looks almost Nolanesque (not a bad thing mind you)

Personally, I'm liking the look/practicality of 3. Never been fond of capes, myself, and that one, with an 'armor' texture would likely do best in my opinion.
To me, Huntress isn't about cheesecake, like some others are. She's about putting the hurt on.

I would like to recommend a cross between 1,2 and 6 for more reference. [link] [link] [link] Huntress is very odd pic out the DC universe (mainly because I never liked her ) However seeing what you have done I say keep the Jacket from 2 lose the cape.
